How to add texture to create stunning images

By: Natalie Finney

Ever wondered how to achieve that stunning painterly look? Adding texture to your images is one way to do just that, and can finish them off with a beautiful vintage, weathered look.

Two of our Gather Instructors, Helen and Nat have put together their top 5 tips when adding texture layers  in Photoshop:

Perfect Placement …

Place and stretch your texture layer over your entire image to ensure there are no noticeable edges.

Drop the Colour …

Convert your texture layer to black and white to avoid any texture colours affecting your underlying image tones.

Try different blend modes …

Play around with different blend modes to see what works with your chosen texture and your image.

Layer more than one …

Try layering more than one texture over your image and adjust the opacity of each individually if you feel they are too strong.

Flip It …

Inverting your texture layer can quite often have a surprisingly interesting and varied effect! Invert your texture layer in colour and luminosity by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL/CMD + I.
