“Deadheads” an unexpected surprise

By Lisa Slivka

Before I picked up the camera, I assumed that people that spend their lives behind the lens are too focused on what is happening directly in front of them and are missing out on the bigger picture. The more time that I spend taking photos, the more that I realize how wrong I was - I’m slowing down to appreciate my surroundings and the time that I get to enjoy them. My camera gives me the opportunity to capture what it feels like to be in the moment.

One of my favorite themes to photograph is finding beauty in unexpected places. “Deadheads” was definitely in a location where I wasn’t expecting to find anything of beauty. At the entrance to the demonstration fields at Roozengaarde, there are waste bins that appear to have been placed for visitors to dispose of their trash on the way to the tulips and daffodils. One of those bins yielded an unexpected surprise.
