Fine Art Self Portraiture
with Manuela Thames
In large measure becoming an artist consists of learning to accept yourself, which makes your work personal, and in following your own voice, which makes your work distinctive.
― David Bayles, Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking
How do you create art or tell a story using your own self as the main photographic subject?
Join Manuela Thames as she guides you through a 5 weeklong exploration of self-portraiture. Dive into the history and discover why artist have expressed themselves through self-portraiture for centuries, uncover the inspiration and vision behind compelling self-portraiture and develop your own cohesive series with an artist statement.
From concept to final image, we will cover all aspects of self-portraiture including practical and technical tips for a successful session, use of props, staged lighting and natural light, the choice of location and clothing, and using different camera settings to create the effect you envision. Manuela Thames will also teach you how to enhance your self-portraits using editing techniques in Photoshop and Lightroom, and we will explore the possibilities of mixed media.
This workshop will appeal to photographers who have created self-portraits in the past and would like feedback and help in putting together a cohesive series, as well as to photographers who have been hesitant about self-portraiture and would like to take on the challenge and fun of being both behind and in front of the camera.
Joy, beauty, pain and grief are part of everyone’s experience, but our individual stories are all different. Human beings are fascinating creatures, and we learn so much from each other and about ourselves through storytelling.
This workshop is a safe space for experimenting, exploring, stepping outside your comfort zone and being vulnerable.
