Textures with Kathleen Clemons

I love adding textured backgrounds to many of my photographs and have been collecting textures for years. You can find texture subjects everywhere! I have created many by taking images of frost, rust, paint, water, wheat, plants, fish and more!

I have also created some with Photoshop Brushes that I have designed, the possibilities are endless!

So, when do I consider adding a texture?

  •  When there is a very plain background.

  •  When I need to neutralize background elements so that they blend together better.

  •  When I want to create a painterly look.

  •  When I want to make the subject pop/background flattened.

  •  When I choose to change mood, color or tone in my photo.

Also, important, when do I not add a texture?

  • When the subject/scene has strong natural texture.

  • when I have filled the frame with my subject and there is no background.

Applying textures to your photos in Photoshop is quite simple, here is a very basic Video Tutorial:

Textures can also be printed and placed behind your subjects, wonderful for hiding a messy background
